Why New Year's Resolutions Do Not Work

The following are a few of the things that Akan Cohen author of several books including Relax into a Wealth has to say about New Year’s Resolutions. These quotes come from an article he wrote titled Keeping Your New Year's Evolutions.

"Many of us make New Year's resolutions that, according to many surveys, don't last very long. Many are gone by the end of January, and most are gone by July. Most resolutions have to do with losing weight, saving money, and taking self-improvement courses. All worthy goals, to be sure, but why do most resolutions tank? There is no joy, intention, or true choice in any of them, your life is one big "I have to.” Shift from 'discipline' to 'blissipline.' You will always succeed at things you choose because they make you happy. You will never succeed at things you do because you owe.

When we take the time and self-honoring to do things that fill our soul, the other stuff becomes easier, lighter, and in many cases the volume of distasteful activity miraculously diminishes."

My last posting on Dream/Vision Board received a lot of attention. I realize why after reading this article by Akan Cohen. People have become discouraged in making New Year's resolutions because they have felt so bad about all of the past failures. The Dream/Vision Board allows us to post and visualize the passions of our soul, the things that will bring us much joy when they are manifested in our lives. For me I have a passion for travel. Whenever I arrive in a new place on a trip I am much like a child on Christmas morning opening a present. Because of this strong passion the last story I wrote about creating a trip to Switzerland by posting it in my Dream Board is something that happens frequently.

One year I posted a dream trip to Europe to include a second visit to Lourdes. My son-in-law and I were in my office talking and the doorbell rang. A friend came in to hand me an envelope with cash in it to cover all expenses for an 8-day trip to Paris and Lourdes. Needless to say my son-in-law was awed and deeply impressed.

I am motivated by success so I definitely did not begin this practice of posting desires that were this big. I started with small things, had success and that motivated me to post bigger dreams.

Here’s another example of how powerful this tool from my tool box can be. Last week in my blog I said I was posting the following statement on my Dream Board:  I live in a positive environment with people who encourage positive thinking. Today I saw a friend’s Facebook posting where this statement appeared. She apparently read the blog and wanted to create this in her life.
