Power of Affirmations

Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right. Henry Ford

During my two-year tour of duty in the military my total focus had been on being a good soldier. When I came home I was definitely not prepared for an office job and it was not the job I was seeking. I wanted to work in sales. However I went on the interview for an assistant office manager’s position because there was an immediate opening.

In the interview the manager went over all the tasks involved in this job. I would be expected to type, operate office equipment, produce reports and receive calls from customers placing orders. I assured him I could handle the job. Much to my surprise he hired me on that Friday evening and I reported to work on the following Monday.

This first job gave me the opportunity to create the job of my dreams within the same company. If I had said at the interview that I didn't like being in an office talking to customers or I would rather a job through which I would interact with people. Or if I would have focused on the things I didn’t like about the job, the typing and operating office equipment, I would have missed the great opportunities the future had in store for me.

Affirmations have always helped me to turn a negative reality into a positive possibility. What you focus on in life has a way of showing up when you least expect it to. On this first job after returning from military service I began saying the following affirmations for the few years I was confined to this office:

I am connecting with a company that is looking for a sales person.
I am enjoying talking to the customers that are calling in to place orders. I see them as my customers.

I reached a point of discouragement because no sales position became available in that company for quite a while, three years to be exact. At that point I went to an employment agency to seek a career in sales. Amazingly, that same week the salesman responsible for customers in the New Orleans area and a 75-mile radius of the city asked me to join him in the sales manager’s office. He announced he was leaving the company and was recommending that I take over his position.

The message of unlimited possibilities has been taught over and over. The basic concept is always the same. Success or failure is determined by the individual reading the message. An action plan has to be initiated to make it happen. I found a copy of a book I read in 1960 by Napoleon Hill Think and Grow Rich. The following supports the value of having a workable technique like affirmations to direct our thoughts. "When Henley wrote the prophetic lines, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul," he should have informed us that we are the masters of our fate, the captains of our souls, because we have the power to control our thoughts. He should have told us that our brains become magnetized with dominating thoughts we hold in our minds."

Affirmations I use daily are in the present tense as though I am already experiencing the results they suggest. “I am living a life of financial abundance” is an example. My feeling at that time may be that I am overwhelmed in dealing with surprise expenses. The affirmation allows me to control my thoughts until I can come up with an action plan to resolve the current financial issues.

You may want to start today by writing a few affirmations declaring what you want to manifest in your life. Remember it is possible to create a life of your dreams by affirming your goals and following up with an action plan to bring it all into your reality.
