“We are in the midst of a momentous event in the evolution of human consciousness, but they won’t be talking about it in the news tonight.” Eckhart Tolle “Meditation will change your life for the better, enhance your physical health, improve your sleep, and help you achieve your goals, both material and spiritual.” Deepak Chopra Supporting the anxiety that is currently present in the world and supported by the news media is our choice. For some reason we have become indoctrinated to believe if we miss the latest update on news on the late night news we will not be able to sleep. In fact it is just the opposite. The negative, anxiety invoking news we see before going to bed for the night interferes with our sleep pattern. Last night my wife and I agreed to not look at any news programs on television. We went to bed early and I got a solid night of restful sleep. This morning I woke up early full of energy and eager to get several impending projects completed before 7 a.m. Immediately after my retirement several years ago we all faced one of the worst economic crises in recent American history. As fear and panic became the overriding conversation with everyone along with the bleak picture being present on the news it was almost impossible to escape anxiety. I did not recognize what it was doing to my health until my blood pressure got out of control and I had my first ever panic attack. This tumultuous time turned out to be a blessing because I incorporated many practices to deal with stress on a daily basis. One is my daily journaling through which I express my gratefulness for the many blessings in my life. This directs my focus and jump starts my day in a positive direction. My wife and I made a commitment to exercise for one hour three days a week. It has been amazing to see the improvement in our balance and strength with our Pilates class, and the increase of our overall energy level by doing cardio and weight bearing exercises. Last week I talked about my incorporation of hypnosis with my massage session to quiet my mind and allow suggested affirmations given to me in this relaxed state to assist me in creating a life of abundance. Before talking about the next practice I want to share with you a success I experience a few days after my session. I received a call from our CPA wanting to review my tax return. There is always some tension in anticipating the bottom line of receiving a refund or paying additional taxes. She informed me because of the loss on one of our buckets of income I would receive a tax refund. This information supports my belief that these practices work. The latest implementation in our daily routine is meditation. This has been an on and off practice over the years. Now with more and more supportive scientific research becoming available I am convinced this practice is a necessity. The best time for me is early morning but everyone’s schedule is not as flexible as mine. The book listed below offers a great exploration of the history of meditation and its journey into mainstream American culture using scientific studies to support its value. Even those with the most hectic lifestyles have come to appreciate the need for meditation in their lives. # 1 New York Times Bestseller 10% Happier by Dan Harris How I tamed the voice in my head, reduced stress without losing my edge, and found self-help that actually works. "Things truly got sci-fi when researchers started peering directly into the brains of meditators. A blockbuster MRI study from Harvard found that people took the eight week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course had thicker gray matter in the areas of their brain associated with self-awareness and compassion, while the regions associated with stress actually shrank." You may want to consider the benefits of incorporating meditation into your daily routines. A great start is just 5 minutes a day! to edit.h
